The demand for the activity connected to specialist lifesaving is mostly conditioned by the presence of unfavorable natural phenomena (floods, earthquakes) as by well as the growth of popularity of physical activity (canoeing, skiing, mountaineering, sailing), that involves various dangers. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that increasing amount of different events (concerts, sport competitions) has also its contribution.
The significant influence on creating new training concepts referring to specialist lifesaving was brought by the regulation about medical lifesaving from 2006, that obliged the professional lifeguards to complete the national qualified first aid course (KPP). On the basis of this regulation, in order to realize the social duties connected with providing help to people in danger, the National Medical Lifesaving system was established (PRM). The organizations cooperating with this system are, among others; Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue (GOPR), Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR), Water Volunteer Lifeguard Association (WOPR).
In 2010, The European Resuscitation Council (ERR) has published most recent directives when it comes to the proceeding in direct life threat. These directives were approved by Polish Resuscitation Council (PRR) and it has became obligatory for all services cooperating with National Medical Lifesaving system.
The predominant aim of the authors is to discuss the issues referring directly to the functioning of the specialist lifesaving organizations in Poland in the light of the latest regulations and directives. In the present publication, the authors are basing on their own, often long-lasting experience connected with specialist lifesaving (working as a lifeguard, training activity concerning water and mountain lifesaving). In the article, the authors make use of legal regulations, dispositions, directives, current literature and materials found in the Internet.
